Exploration and clarification of the methodological possibilities, challenges and limits of a Global Philosophy of Education.

About
The future of philosophy is moving towards ‘global philosophy’. This holds for general philosophy as well as for different philosophical fields: global philosophy of religion has begun to be established as a field, and global ethics has begun to move beyond a mere focus on global problems to becoming global in inspiration. Despite a few attempts to include non-Western traditions (such as Buddhist, Confucian, African and Australian indigenous approaches) into the conversation in the Philosophy of Education, the idea of a Global Philosophy of Education (GlobalPhilEd), has so far largely remained an unrealized project, however.
Thus, the aim of this project is to move the anglophone field of Philosophy of Education beyond its anglo- and eurocentric bias and establish the field of GlobalPhilEd. This entails not the establishment of a global philosophy in the sense of a universal or hegemonic philosophical theory, but the development of a global practice of philosophy of education.
The rationale for such a project is clear: 1) By moving beyond the limitations of different national and regional traditions we can improve the way philosophical problems are addressed, because we gain valuable ‘external’ perspectives on our own traditions, which allow for better understanding and self-criticism; 2) In order to adequately understand the educational dimensions of the escalating global crises we face today we need to make use of the best of what the world´s different traditions in the philosophy of education have brought forth.
Key objectives
We pursue three objectives:
- 01
- 02
The exploration and rethinking of concrete problems and themes in the philosophy of education and its different branches (e.g., educational ethics, epistemology of education), in light of different world philosophical traditions, and how this may guide the reform of existing educational structures and practices.
- 03
The launch a new field of philosophical research - 'Global Philosophy of Education' - and the creation of a global community interested in bringing this field forward.
